Native American Indian reservations comprise 5% of US land yet contains an estimated 10% of all energy resources. The estimated total U.S. geothermal power resource potential is approximately 530 GW.

According to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), total Tribal geothermal energy potential at just 196 different sites could account for more than 2% of US geothermal potential at 16 GW. Total US geothermal Tribal potential at 10% of US energy production could be closer to 53 GW.

In recent years, both the US government and investors are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to develop “next-generation” technologies that make it easier and cheaper to access the Earth’s heat nationwide. Next-generation technologies include several different approaches, all of which rely to some extent on the expertise and tools of the oil and gas industry. According to the DOE, these new technologies could expand the nation’s geothermal capacity by more than twenty-fold, adding at least 90 GW of firm and flexible power to America’s grid by 2050.
